Mr. Soulié - Breeding bisons of Périgord

Impassioned by agriculture since his more tender childhood, David SOULIE discovers the bison there is ten years now. This meeting was decisive in the choice of its future career: it was necessary to make known this mythical animal with general public so that everyone can enjoy this so goûteuse and dietetic red meat.

It is in 2003 that it reinstates the bison in its medium of origin, Périgord, where many representations in various caves (Lascaux...) attest its presence near the men. Since, about thirty bisons graze on 40 hectares of meadow with MIALLET.

Food

The bison saw all the year outside. Its basic food results from the pasture of meadows. The completion of the males intended for the production of meat is done with pre. For this period, they consume cereals and hay. The hay produced on the exploitation is distributed at will during all the year.

The Corral

The bison is an animal which keeps a wild character: it is afraid of the man and does not like to be locked up. To attract it, one uses the trick and the food (cereals). The park of application, or corral, is essential with the breeding of the bison.

Is used it to catch, immobilize and carry out all the interventions necessary to the good health of the animal and his production. The corral consists of a park of waiting, a corridor, a cage of weighing and a cage of application.
The walls of the parks and the corridor of application consist of slides of motorway carried by cross-pieces of railroad on a 2.5 m height.


Traceability and sanitary arrangements

The bisons are identified same manner as the cows: they lay out each one of loops, with their own number as well as papers indicating their genealogy and their origin. This makes it possible to establish the filiation of each animal and to guarantee a good traceability.

The bison is subjected to the specific medical regulations to all the bovines. It is the subject thus of regular trackings by blood test like the cows. These interventions are carried out by a veterinary surgeon in the corral.

Regulation

The bison being regarded as a savage animal, its breeding is subjected to a precise regulation and authorizations. To raise bisons it is necessary to obtain a certificate of competence and an authorization of opening of establishment delivered by the prefecture. In France the breeding of the bison is governed by the decree of April 2, 2001.
